Early Life:
Sarojini Naidu was born in hyderabad on Feb 12, 1879 as the eldest daughter of scientist, philosopher father Aghornath Chattopadhyaya and mother Varasundari who was a Bengali poeters. Her father was a pioners and he established the Nizam's college in 1878.She was bought up in a house of intellectuals, poets and philosophers.She claims that she was bought up in a home of Indians, not Hindus or Brahmins.
Education:
Sarojini passsed her matriculation at the age of 12. Her father wanted her to become a mathematician or a scientist.But she loved poetry from a very early age. At the age of 16, she travelled to england to study first at king's college London. With her father's support she wrote a play called "Maher Muneer" in persian language.
Personal Life:
At the age of 17, she met Dr. Muthyala Govindarajalu Naidu and fell in love with him. He was from Andhra Pradesh. After her studies at the age of 19, she married him. They were married by the Act (1872) in madras, in 1898. They had 4 children: Jayasurya, Padmaja, Randheer and Leelamani. Her daughter padmaja later became Governor of West Bengal.
Contribution in Freedom Struggle:
From 1916, she totally contributed herself to the fight for freedom.She was responsible for awakening the women of India. In 1925 she was elected as the president of the congress, the first Indian woman to hold the post. In July 1919, Sarojini became the Home Rule League's ambassador to England. Sarojini was with Gandhiji during Dandi March. On May 5, Gandhi was arrested Naidu was arrested shortly and was in jail for several months.But she was released due to her poor health.Again she was arrested during "Quit India" protest and stayed in jail for 21 months with Gandhiji. Naidu shared a warm relationship with Mohandas Gandhi even calling him "Mickey Mouse".
On August 15 1947, with the independence of India, she became the Governor of the united provinces, India's first woman governor.
Works:
Sarojini Naidu is also well acclaimed for her contribution to poetry. In 1905, the first volume of her collection of poems was published as " The Golden Threshold". She published two others collections called The Bird of Time, The Broken Wings, later The Magic Tree, The Wizard Mask and A Treasury of Poems.
Death:
On March 2 1949, she took her last breath and India lost her beloved child, "Bulbul:. She died in her office at Lucknow at the age of 70. Her name will be in the golden history of India as an inspiring poet and a Brave freedom fighter. She was truly one of the jewels of the world.Her birthday is celebrated as "Women's Day.
